Earthrace UK were out on the street in front of Australia House, London to support long time animal cruelty campaigner, Colin Riddell’s calls for a change in Queensland’s law to protect dugongs and sea turtles.

The campaign, which went global and included support from Steve Irwin’s father, Bob, has now succeeded in persuading State Fisheries Minister John McVeigh, to act on an LNP election promise to introduce legislation to remove cruelty exemptions for traditional owners and bring Queensland’s animal welfare legislation in line with other states.

Whilst this is great news for everyone involved, it’s not over yet. There is still a battle to enforce the new law by providing enough wardens to monitor the hunting, and in persuading others to report cruelty incidents when they are seen.
